Infinity Ward and Activision are bringing back Campaign Early Access for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and for a lot of players, that's the bit they wanted to hear first. If you're already planning loadouts, talking launch week with friends, or even checking side options like MW4 Bot Lobbies for later multiplayer plans, it's worth knowing that the story mode opens on October 16 for eligible players, one week before the full release on October 23.
How the early campaign window works
The early access offer isn't tied to every copy of the game. You'll need to pre-order Modern Warfare 4 digitally to get in on October 16. That includes the digital Standard Edition and the Vault Edition, so players don't have to buy the most expensive version just to play the campaign early. Physical buyers, at least based on the confirmed details, shouldn't expect the same early unlock. It's a digital pre-order bonus, plain and simple.

Don't expect a multiplayer head start
This is where some players may need to slow down a bit. Campaign Early Access means exactly that: the campaign. It doesn't mean early account leveling, weapon unlocks, operator grinding, or DMZ runs before everyone else. The competitive side of Modern Warfare 4 stays locked until launch day. So if your usual plan is to race through ranks the second servers go live, you'll still be waiting until October 23 with the rest of the crowd.
Digital pre-order is required for the October 16 campaign start.
Standard Edition and Vault Edition both qualify.
Multiplayer, DMZ, and progression systems unlock on October 23.
Open Beta early access is also included with digital pre-orders.
Why players are reacting well
The return of this feature feels notable because Activision skipped it for Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. After that, plenty of fans assumed early campaign access had quietly disappeared. Bringing it back for Modern Warfare 4 makes sense, though. The campaign can breathe a little. Players can take in the missions, the cutscenes, and the set pieces without feeling like they're losing ground in multiplayer. That matters, because launch weekend in Call of Duty is usually loud, messy, and full of people grinding as hard as they can.
The beta is still waiting on dates
Digital pre-orders also come with early access to the Modern Warfare 4 Open Beta, but Infinity Ward hasn't shared the exact schedule yet. Based on how Call of Duty usually handles testing, the beta should land in the weeks before October 23. For now, the dates that matter are simple: campaign access begins on October 16, the full game arrives on October 23, and players who plan to buy MW4 Bot Lobbies or focus on multiplayer extras will need to wait until the complete online suite is live.
