PST Sync issue

Postby gcook on Tue Jan 19, 2010 6:33 pm

Hi,

I'm seeing an issue with Outlook not being able to access a PST it has open after a sync has occurred. SFFS is configured to do Partial File updates and to make use of VSS for open files although it doesn't seem to use VSS for the PST.

After the job completes the user will attempt to look at an folder in the PST and will receive a message that Outlook cannot find the file or it doesn't exist. Restarting Outlook restores access to the file.

ideas?

thanks,

Hello,

I would recommend the following change to the VSS settings:

In the settings category "Access & Retries", first tab sheet "File Access", choose "Use For All Files" for Volume Shadowing. That way, the program won't grab control of the file in a moment where Outlook may have unlocked it. Instead, VSS will always be used and file control will be reserved for Outlook.

Please note that VSS requires an Administrator account. So since Windows Vista, you need to start the program by right-clicking its icon and choosing "Run As Administrator". If you want to use the scheduler, it must be installed as a service. To do that, just stop the default Background Scheduler and choose "Use: Service Scheduler". Best wishes,

Okay. Settings set, service installed and started. Waiting for the next run. Will update with results.

So back at this now after getting the backup NAS to work properly. The sync is mostly working now but I'm getting the following errors when it tries to backup the big (~16GB) .pst. I know, it's a ridiculous size but some users....

8:06:21 PM: error writing to \\storage\username\Backup\Documents\OutlookData\outlook.pst

The specified network name is no longer available.
error writing to \\storage\username\Backup\Documents\OutlookData\outlook.pst

This is a networking problem or bug in the NAS. It has nothing to do with our software.

You may want to do a nonstop ping to the address that the nas is attached to by doing a ping -t <IP Address>

Then see if you are getting any dropped communication. Do this while the job is running. Try to determine if it is dropping at the same time of the failure.

Also there are many cheaper nas devices that will not handle a 16Gb file. It may be too large for the file system on it.

I think it was an issue with the client machine's wireless connection not maintaining during the jobs. It seems to have corrected itself and the job has been completing successfully.

thanks much,
