Profile settings help

Postby Cram on Thu Jan 21, 2010 1:16 pm

I have tried a ton of different settings but things just don’t seem to work the way I want them to. So I asking for some advise on what’s the best setting to try to get things going. So this is what I’m trying to do. Need to sync office computer files to portable HD to sync with home computer keep all the same and updated. I work from both locations and want to have the portable HD to be the middle man. I have tried standard copying but want to be able to delete folders and files, tried smart tracking and I can get it to create new folders and rename them, but not delete them in real-time. Also if I have a program running like autocad and save my file when I close the drawing I can watch the sync program delete my files in explore. So without telling every combination I have tried, can you help me with some settings to use.

Thanks

Hello,

first please make sure you have the latest software version from our download page, http://www.superflexible.com/download.htm. SmartTracking is good, and you can configure what to do with deleted files on the "Configure" dialog for SmartTracking.

However, if you use the Real-Time feature, it has its own settings for deletions. So you need to go to Schedule->Monitoring / Real-Time Sync and click on the Real-Time checkbox to bring up the configuration dialog for that. Make sure "Process deletions when running in real-time" is checked. Also take a look at the safety delay. If you don't want it, type 0.

There was a problem with AutoCAD files in earlier versions. They weren't actually deleted but renamed to the temp file name that AutoCAD uses (similar to "atmp1234"). This could happen if real-time mode was used with two-way syncs. To avoid it, you need to choose the option "Ignore certain temporary files in real time".

In general, if you don't need real-time, you should switch to regular scheduling such as every X minutes. Real-time is working very well but Windows sends a lot of real-time notifications to the software, including many temporary file operations, and the program does its best to guess what is actually intended. As opposed to a fully scheduled run where the source and destination file lists are completely scanned and compared, which is a more exact method than the real-time feature.

After I wrote this I updated to the newest 5.00 and see a bunch of new updates and things seem to work much better

Yes that is what it was doing changing the file name, but now with ver 5.0 its leaving it alone and working right.

After trying all the setting and testing it out i think i got everything playing nice and working together. Butthe only setting i'm having problems with now would be if I delete a folder that is empty or has a file in it, it does not delete on the other side. If I create a new folder it syncs and if i rename it it renames on the other side. but deleteing it will not do? Any ideas? Also thanks for writing back and with the help

To analyze this, we need to look at log files. Logging can be turned on on the Program Settings dialog. You can send some log files to info@superflexible.com with a short comment.
