Follow reparse points wrong behaviour

Postby zsero on Sun Feb 10, 2013 11:31 am

Hi,

I'm just evaluating the latest Syncovery before purchase. I have the following problem:

The follow reparse points settings as it is now, doesn't make sense (for mirroring purposes at least). What it does now is it takes a symbolic link like:
s:\from -> s:\to and turns it into d:\from -> s:\to
where s: and d: is the source and destination drive.

Can you make it work such that it's relative to the destination's path? I understand that not all reparse points need to point inside the folder path, so a good implementation might require 2 more options at the reparse dialog:
[ ] - convert reparse points relative to destination path
[ ] - skip reparse points outside the destination path

You can't say it doesn't make sense. It depends on the use case. If you want to make a mirror hard drive that would be able to replace the original one in case of a failure, then it makes sense to keep the destination.

Additional options might be added in the future.

What I'm doing is the exact thing as mirroring my hard drive. I want to remove the old one and keep the symbolic links on the new one. But most symbolic links link to the drive itself. Imagine multiple directories linked into the Dropbox folder. Both dropbox and the directories are on the same drive.

Now with Syncovery the following things happened:
1. With the turned on settings, I created lots of wrong symbolic links.
2. Then I tried to revert, but it doesn't work.
3. Now I have to manually delete all my symbolic links and look for a solution to mirror them as they are now!

You only need to change the drive letter of the new drive after removing the old drive.

This works as designed. If it doesn't meet your requirements, then that may well be so.
