Can someone give me some advice? I have no experience of servers etc. My son and I have both a server with the idea of backing up data over the internet between them. So far it’s not gone well. We are trying v5.63, build 292 and its very very slow. In running the last job I had errors ftp://******.homeserver.com,,,,,: An unexpected network error occurred twelve times, I chose ignore.
When running it stopped doing anything for a long time, by then it was reporting x days to make the transfer. So I stopped it and in the error log was

Is the FTP server connected to the Internet directly or is there a router in between? Because setting up an FTP server behind a router is difficult.

Can you give me the exact configuration? Is it like this:

Laptop -- Router -- Internet -- Server ?

So the is server connected directly to the Internet? Or is there another router?

I assume that the FTP software is installed on the server, and Superflexible is installed on your laptop?

Which FTP software are you using and what's the server's operating system?

My son had me run FileZilla_3.5.3_ on my laptop before installing superflexible. To be honest I don’t think anything was installed on the server but I may be wrong. (Sorry to be so vague, he works long hours, has a small child and we only really speak at weekends!)
The server has WHS2011 installed and goes through the same router
Sorry if replys are a bit unhelpfull at times, I'm dislexic so what looks right to me (let alone lack of the right skills) may not be how it should be writen.

I have enabled FTP in WHS2012,
My son says
Yes it is behind a router. It is using it's default passive port range. The router has the following ports forwarded to the server:

20-21 TCP (FTP)
49152-65534 TCP/UDP (FTP passive ports)
1701 UDP (L2TP)
500 UDP (IPSEC)

It appears that router and server are not working well together. I don't know what the default passive port range is, so I can't check if the forwarded ports are sufficient or not.

In our software, you can try turning Passive Mode on or off, as well as the three different FTP libraries 1,2,3 which you can select on the main tab sheet of the Internet/FTP dialog.

You may also want to consider using a different protocol, such as WebDAV or SSH. WebDAV is included in Windows, and for SSH server software you could use WinSSHD from http://www.bitvise.com/winsshd.
